We returned to Wilshire Boulevard Temple, Irmas Campus, Saturday to document the Bat Mitzvah of the lovely Samantha. Few facilities we know of are this dramatic. Love that blue backdrop! And the purple dress!
Afterwards, the party was held at the Beverly Hills Country Club, with a high-energy dance set by Randy and his team of amazing dancers from Real Genius Entertainment. We'll post pix from the party later in the week.

Tyler's Bar Mitzvah | Congregation Tikvat Jacob | Manhattan Beach

Congregation Tikvat Jacob Bar Mitzvah
Congregation Tikvat Jacob in Manhattan Beach is a conservative synagogue, and as such, has strict policies about photography. Specially, no pictures on Saturday, during Shabbat. But on Saturday, Tyler's Bar Mitzvah was an afternoon event, ending after sundown, so Rabbi Mark Hyman agreed to let us take a few shots--at the tail end, once the Havdalah ceremony began. So here it is folks--history in the making--the first shots we know of, ever taken at CTJ, during a service.

Rabbi Mark read a wonderful poem by Danny Siegel for Tyler, who is autistic, and we'd like to share it with you here:

"I am not some developmentally delayed creature today.

Today I am a full-grown Jew.

Do not reach for your Kleenex;

be no more moved to joy for my Bar Mitzvah moment

than for anybody else's with a quicker mind.

There is nothing special about me today.

I came of age.

I recited my blessings.

I joined the congregation.

It is all natural,

though I would not have known this

without my teachers' and my parents' help.

Expect no less of me than of yourselves,

and no more.

My genes specialize in open love and kindness.

For this, do not admire me from a distance.

Do not wish another chromosome for yourself.

All is not beautiful,

even to me,

but it is more beautiful than you allow yourselves to see.

This face, distinct and smiling, feels pain,

but I can manage.

You, with your own, do the same."

Redondo Beach Bat Mitzvah Video | Temple Menorah

Here's a fun little video highlight from Alexandra's recent Bat Mitzvah at Temple Menorah of Redondo Beach. Conor Morris produced this for us and did a fabulous job.

We had a blast at our first Bar Mitzvah party at El Segundo's Automobile Driving Museum. Justin celebrated his simcha there, surrounded by over 75 classic cars from all vintages, authentic diner food (burgers, shakes, etc.) and a magnificent auto theme provided by master event planner Nina Bracker Events. The museum is a little hidden gem off Mariposa. Stop in and check it out!

We had some fun tonight playing with software borders from OnOne software, while going through our photographs from Andy's Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, so naturally, we had to post a few.
How do you like the borders? Let us know.
In shot #3, we love seeing the point of view from the Bar Mitzvah boy's perspective, with his family and friends cheering him on, and the camera's documenting his every move.

It was back this weekend to our favorite Orange County shul, Temple Beth Shalom of Santa Ana, for Andy's Bar Mitzvah. As the simcha fell on Sukhot, TBS, as they call it, put a sukkah on the bima, full of apples and fall leaves. It made a wonderful backdrop for Andy, and a fun angle for us.

Max was called to the Torah last Saturday at the stately Wilshire Boulevard Temple in West Los Angeles, Irmas Campus. Last month, we photographed Brandon at WBT's Camp Hess Kramer facility in Malibu, and will be returning in December to Irmas for Samantha's Bat Mitzvah,
We can't wait!

Did we mention that we love photographing Bar and Bat Mitzvahs at Wilshire Boulevard Temple? We returned to WBT last weekend, to the big Irmas Campus on Olympic, to photograph Max's Bar Mitzvah. We love this shot of the Rabbi looking at the congregation from her perspective. Agree? Let us know your thoughts.

Here's some shots from one of our all-time favorite Bar Mitzvah shots, an outdoor event at Camp Hess Kramer in Malibu, the facility run by the Wilshire Boulevard Temple. Best-known as a summer camp, the hillside "chapel," also serves as a homey setting for an outdoor Bar/Bat Mitzvah. Brandon was called to the Torah recently at WBT's Hess Kramer, with a fun party down the hill afterwards in a tent. Mazel Tov Brandon!

As the daughter of two talented veterinarians, it was only natural that Jamie's Manhattan Beach Bat Mitzvah party would be stock full of animals. The party, held at their home, featured lots of kids and adults, as well as a baby kangaroo, raccoon and a long, shiny snake.
Jamie was called to the Torah at Congregation Tikvat Jacob in Manhattan Beach, our hometown temple.

Dimitri is a talented young Los Angeles actor, so it was natural that when he joined forces with Sam Graham of Graham & Graham Photography for his Bar Mitzvah shoot, they enjoyed going the extra mile for some arty, magazine worthy shots. Dimitri had his Los Angeles Bar Mitzvah at the Leo Baeck Temple--(speaking of art--right across the street from the Getty Center) in September, with a fun party (two ice cream cakes!) in Baeck's social hall. Mazel Tov Dimitri!

Temple Shalom of the South Bay Bar Mitzvah

Here's a video highlight of a Temple Shalom of the South Bay Bar Mitzvah, by Danny Knutson, for Graham And Graham Photography. Rabbi Lori Schneide leads the Hermosa Beach based congregation, with Cantor Ari Perlmutter, at Alex's Manhattan Beach Bar Mitzvah at the Manhattan Beach Marriott.

Redondo Beach Bat Mitzvah | Temple Menorah

The lovely Alex was called to the torah at Temple Menorah last weekend. We're huge fans of natural, window light portraits, and it's not every day we get to make use of natural light inside a synagogue. But we found a special place at Redondo Beach's Temple Menorah to acheive it, and we're sure happy with the results. Mazel Tov, Alex!

Manhattan Beach Bar Mitzvah | Temple Shalom of the South Bay

Now this was a really fun Bar Mitzvah. Not only did we get to document it at our all-time favorite venue, the Manhattan Beach Marriott, but we had perfect photographer weather (overcast, and nice even light) and a terrific subject, Alex.
Alex is a member of Hermosa Beach's Temple Shalom of the South Bay, which doesn't have a permanent temple, and stages its Bar and Bat Mitzvahs at venues around the South Bay.
Hence, the greenery backdrop for Alex. We love it!
For the simcha, Alex's theme was the Bard himself, Shakespeare, which is why the ever jovial Bar Mitzvah lad is seen sporting a jester's hat during the Hora.
Finally, we do mother/son and father/daughter dance pictures every weekend, but this one here is our new all-time favorite. Love those smiles and sways!

Bar/Bat Mitzvah Showcase a Smash!

Sunday's Bar/Bat Mitzvah Showcase at Raleigh Studios was a huge hit, with over 200 people attending. Parents of Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach and Palos Verdes Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, with events in 2009, 2010 and 2011, attended, along with 30 vendors. Thanks to local temples Congregation Tikvat Jacob of Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach's Temple Menorah and Jewish Community Center Chabad and Hermosa Beach's Temple Shalom of the South Bay for helping to make the event a reality. And special kudos to Manhattan Beach event planner Nina Bracker for putting it all together. Look forward to seeing everyone again next year!

Graham & Graham Patriarch in San Francisco Chronicle

Jerry Graham, the father/grandfather of the Graham & Graham duo, was written up this week in the San Francisco Chronicle. He's pictured here with his wife Catherine, the co-owner of their Flipper Fanny's Cookies, home to Santa Cruz cookies, gifts and wedding cakes. Read the interview here.

Jerry Graham was between jobs in 1985 when he was approached by KRON production manager Bob Klein to host a short travel segment for the station. That turned into "Bay Area Backroads," and after the show's first eight successful years, he was one of the most recognizable faces in local television.

Now retired and living in Santa Cruz, Graham, 75, is still busy, helping his wife, Catherine, with her baking business (Flipperfannyscookies.com) and spending time with his 17-year-old daughter, Lily, before she heads off to Reed College in Oregon. He also works out every day, plays basketball and reads whenever he can.

We talked to Jerry by phone last week.

Q: Did you keep track of "Bay Area Backroads" after you left?

A: Actually, I didn't, for no other reason that I moved to Santa Cruz when we left, and our Direct TV does not carry Channel 4. Every once in a while, and this is way back, someone would say, "Hey, I saw you on TV!" And I would say, "You did?" They were running some repeats. ... When I retired, I retired. My main interests right now are my wife's baking business and basketball. I'm preparing for the Senior Olympics.

Q: Describe Jerry Graham's basketball game. Are you an outside shooter? A hard-fouling power forward? A scrappy low-post man?

A: I have an all-around game. I'm a little over 6 feet. The captain on our team told me I'm the fastest guy on the team, so they rely on me to guard whoever is the fastest on the other team. I'm a pretty good outside shot. When I was a kid, I was a center. Now I'm an outside shooter, trying to avoid as much physical contact as I can.

Q: How do your basketball skills rate against your baking skills?

A: Catherine is the skill person. I'm a lifter. (When) we have to unload the car, I'm very good at that. If I'm told exactly what to do, I can bake and I can mix and I can do everything. But when it comes to a wedding cake, Catherine is a great decorator and designer. I'm the lifter. I can't do any of that.

Q: How much time do you spend traveling the Bay Area backroads in retirement?

A: Very little. In fact when moved here, one of the reasons we picked Santa Cruz after looking at all kinds of places was that it was an hour and a half from the Bay Area. Now I'm amazed how infrequently I get to the Bay Area, even though we have friends all over. I'm not that into travel anymore.

Q: How many tickets did you get during your eight years on the show?

A: None. I was stopped once in Monterey because I made an illegal turn. A patrolman pulled me over, and recognized me, and we talked a little bit. He just told me what I did wrong and that was it. ... Part of the whole concept of the show was to slow down. I was rarely in a hurry.

What we did on our summer vacation

This post has nothing to do with Los Angeles Bar/Bat Mitzvahs or Los Angeles Weddings, but instead, what we did on our summer vacation. We slipped away for two weeks, and stopped by Sandpoint, Idaho, Glacier National Park in Montana, Nelson, British Columbia and finally Gaston, Oregon, to visit our childhood friend Anthony Boutard. We grew up together in Stockbridge, Mass., where we used to roam around with our Pentax and Hasselblad cameras. Now Anthony is one of the leading organic farmers in tiny Gaston, Oregon, where his Ayers Creek Farm specializes in unique beans and berries. He exhibits every week at the McMinnville farmer's market in cute McMinnville, Oregon every Thursday.
If you're in the neighborhood, be sure to stop by and say hi to Anthony and his lovely wife Carol.

P.S. Here's a cool link to a local Oregon TV show that did a segment on Anthony and Carol, and their legendary Ayers Creek Farm

El Segundo Automobile Driving Museum

El Segundo's Automobile Driving Museum for Los Angeles Bar Mitzvah Parties
We had a blast meeting Lucy Kihn, the event manager from El Segundo's Automobile Driving Museum today, and as she proceeded to give us the tour of the facility, we had to pull out the camera and document every moment of it! The new museum is a great venue for Los Angeles Bar/Bat Mitzvah parties and wedding receptions. It's got hundreds of classic cars to view, and a cool private room for kids to dance and enjoy themselves. We love the built-in screen for the video montages--no need to rent a projector or lug a screen. The museum is on Lairport Avenue, which is just a block or two behind Mariposa and Sepulveda. Check `em out at http://www.automobiledrivingmuseum.org

Beverly Hills Bar Mitzvah | Temple Emanuel

It's not every day when you get a call from Mexico City asking for photographs and video at a Beverly Hills bar mitzvah. But we were more than up for the task. Trisha and her son Julio used to live in Beverly Hills, then moved to Mexico City, where they now reside. But Julio wanted to have his bar mitzvah in his old home town, so they flew back, and held the ceremony at Temple Emanuel, with the party in an adjoining room, catered by Animal restaurant. One big highlight we'll never forget: the Mexican Klezmer music, provided by the wonderful Mariachi Divas, playing none other than Simon Tov and Hava Nagaila.

Fiddler on the Roof from your friends at Graham & Graham Photography

We stumbled onto this amazing technological marvel the other day--with two mouse clicks and a copy and paste, we were able to present, to all of our loyal readers, the complete movie of "Fiddler on the Roof," for free. Isn't that amazing?
However, we know you're not going to sit here and watch the entire thing, so we played around the settings and offer you instead, a musical highlight, Tevye the milkman singing a song that says what a lot of people are feeling these days: "If I Were a Rich Man."
Enjoy!
